Troubleshooting Issues

System Requirements

Adobe Reader System Requirements

These are the minimum system resources Adobe Reader requires:
- Pentium®-class processor
- Microsoft® Windows® 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition,Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack 6, Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional or Home, or Windows XP Tablet PC
- 32 MB of RAM (64 MB recommended)
- 60 MB of available hard-disk space

- Internet Explorer 5.01 or greater is required.

The installer creates temporary files during installation so the actual hard disk space required during installation is greater than the values listed above.

Web Browser Support

The web browsers within which PDF files may be viewed are:
Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, 6.0, or 6.1
Netscape Navigator 7.0
America On Line 6.0, 7.0, or 8.0

Installation Instructions

Installing and Uninstalling Adobe Reader for Windows

To install Adobe Reader, follow these steps:

- Make sure you have at least 60 MB of available disk space for a typical installation of Adobe Reader.
- Make sure you have Internet Explorer 5.01 or greater on your system before installing since Adobe Reader requires this software.
- Turn off all anti-virus software before beginning the installation.
- Install Adobe Reader.

To uninstall Adobe Reader, follow these steps:
- From Start select Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
- Select Adobe Acrobat 6 and press the Add/Remove... button

Note: Uninstalling Adobe Reader 6 does not uninstall other versions of Acrobat but does remove Registry settings that are used in common with earlier releases affecting the viewing of PDF files in the browser.

Installation Issues

You must have administrative privileges to install Adobe Reader on Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT.

The Adobe Reader installer uses MSI technology which backs up any files that it might potentially overwrite. If installing over an old version, the required hard disk space for running the Adobe Reader installer is approximately twice the size of the installer.

Shell32.dll version 4.72.3110.0 is required by Adobe Reader self-healing on Windows NT 4 SP 6. When Adobe Reader launches it checks the files installed, and if it finds a problem, initiates self-healing. For Windows NT 4.0 SP 6 users, if you find self-healing is not successful, check that the version of Shell32.dll is 4.72.3110.0 or higher.

Repairing your installation - You can launch Adobe Reader and repair your installation. Select Detect and Repair from the Adobe Reader 6 Help menu. If you cannot launch Adobe Reader successfully you can also repair your installation from the Control Panel. From the Start menu select Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. From the dialog that comes up, select Adobe Reader 6 and then press the Change button to repair your installation.

Reporting System Information - You can find out your system information and what plug-ins you have installed on your system by selecting System Info from the Help menu. The Send Report feature works with your default email program to send a copy of the information in System Parameters and Installed Plug-Ins as an attached text file. You can also use copy (<Ctrl> <c>) and paste (<Ctrol> <v>) from the keyboard to copy and paste the text shown into any text-based application.

Checking for Updates

Adobe Reader can automatically check for updates, which helps ensure that you are using the latest version. Use the Updates panel in the Preferences dialog box to determine how often to check for updates.

To update or set updating preference options:
1. Choose Edit > Preferences and then select Updates on the left side of the dialog box.
2. For Check for Updates, specify how often you want to check for updates. (If you want to turn off automatic updating, choose Manually.)
3. Click View Notifications to preview any notifications before deciding whether to update. Click OK to exit the dialog box.
4. If you don't want Adobe Reader to display a notification when updates have been checked for, deselect Show Auto-Update confirmation Dialog.
5. Deselect Display notification dialog at Startup if you don't want to be advised about available updates when you launch Adobe Reader.
6. Click OK.

You can install updates by choosing Help > Updates.

Troubleshooting Issues

Backward Compatibility

Using Adobe Reader to view and print files created in earlier versions of Acrobat
You can use Adobe Reader to view and print PDF files created with earlier versions of Acrobat taking note of the following:
-Some fonts may be substituted. Acrobat performs font substitution if the font requested is not available on the user's system. When such PDF files are printed, the printed document will appear differently if the font used within the PDF file is available within the printer. Similarly, when such PDF files are viewed on a different system, if the font used within the PDF file is available on that system, the PDF files will view differently as well. PDF files that use the Symbol font, for example, will substitute the Adobe Pi font if the Symbol font is not present on the system being used. You can determine if Acrobat is performing font substitution by selecting Document Properties > Fonts.

Adobe Forms

Using Acrobat with Adobe Forms
You must have Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 installed if you will be using Acrobat with forms created using the Adobe Forms product.

Configuring the Adobe Reader application for your environment

Single-key accelerators are off by default
By default accelerator keys are turned off in Adobe Reader. To turn them on, click the "Use single-key accelerators to access tools" checkbox on the General Preferences panel.

Viewing

Movie requires the Quicktime activeX component for Use Remote URL to work
QuickTime users must install the QuickTime activeX plug-in. If you want to view in Adobe Reader a file via the browser that requires the QuickTime plug-in and you don't have QuickTime's activeX component installed, the Adobe Reader Movie tool's "Use Remote URL" option will not work as expected. QuickTime will display a warning.

To view Photoshop Album 1.0 files in Adobe Reader install the Picture Tasks plug-in
The Picture Tasks plug-in is included in Adobe Reader with all features, but if you have installed the default Adobe Reader, if you attempt to display a Photoshop Album 1.0 file, Adobe Reader displays a message informing you the steps needed to install the Picture Tasks plug-in.

Viewing Photoshop Album 1.0 files in Adobe Reader requires DirectX on Windows NT
For Windows NT 4 SP 6 users, if you find you cannot view Photoshop Album 1.0 files on your system within Adobe Reader you may need to install DirectX version 8 or greater available from Microsoft at their website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/default.asp.

Installing Asian Language Files for Adobe Reader
Asian Language Files are available for Adobe Reader. With any language version of Adobe Reader, you can display Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files that contain text in Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese, and Korean (CJK). You need the additional Asian fonts installed in order to view the PDF file on non-native systems even if the author of a PDF file embeds CJK fonts in the document. All you need to do is install the appropriate Asian Language files for use with Adobe Reader. Asian Language Support installers are available on the Adobe Acrobat 6 product CD, or you can install them on demand (when a file that requires the fonts is opened) using the Updates feature.

Printing

Shrink Large Pages
Shrink Large Pages shrinks large pages to fit the currently selected paper size, but does not enlarge small pages. Pages larger than the imageable area of the currently selected paper size are shrunk to the imageable area of the currently selected paper size.

Purchasing or Viewing eBooks

Activating Adobe Reader 6 for use with eBooks
Before you can purchase or view an eBook your copy of Adobe Reader 6 must have the eBook plug-in installed. If you do not have the eBook plug-in installed, Adobe Reader 6 will inform you and you can install it on demand. Once you have the eBook plug-in installed you need to activate Adobe Reader 6 for use with eBooks. If you try to activate from the Adobe web site and have Acrobat 5 or Acrobat Reader 5 installed, Acrobat 5 or Acrobat Reader 5 may launch instead of Adobe Reader 6 and you may see an "unsupported file type" error message. To avoid this error, be sure to launch Adobe Reader 6 first.

Using eMail to Transfer PDF Files

Note: you may see these issues with other file formats as well as with PDF files.

Using eMail to Transfer a PDF file from a Windows computer system to a Mac OS X computer system
If you transfer a PDF file from a Windows computer system to a Mac OS X computer system using email, the PDF file attachment may become corrupted. A scenario where this may occur is when using Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 on a Windows computer system and either Eudora or Entourage on a Mac OS X computer system. To avoid this problem, configure Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 on the Windows computer system to use uuencoding. To do this follow these steps (instructions are for Outlook Express but the steps are similar for Outlook 2000):
-From the Tools menu select Options...
-Select the Send tab
-By Mail Sending Format select Plain Text
-By Mail Sending Format click on the Plain Text Settings... button
-Select the Uuencode radio button.
-Click OK a couple times to confirm the settings.

Using eMail to Transfer a PDF file from a Mac OS X computer system to a Windows computer system
If you transfer a PDF file from a Mac OS X computer system using email to a Windows computer system, two PDF files may be received. A scenario where this may occur is when using either Eudora or Entourage on a Mac OS X computer system and Outlook Express on a Windows computer system. The first PDF attachment received contains a good copy of the PDF. The second PDF attachment is corrupt and should be ignored.
